| Three Wooden Crosses (Doug Johnson/Kim Williams)
A farmer and a teacher, a hooker and a preacher, Ridin' on a midnight bus bound for Mexico. One's headed for vacation, one for higher education, An' two of them were searchin' for lost souls. That driver never ever saw the stop sign. An' eighteen wheelers can't stop on a dime.
There are three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway, Why there's not four of them, Heaven only knows. I guess it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, It's what you leave behind you when you go.
That farmer left a harvest, a home and eighty acres, The faith an' love for growin' things in his young son's heart. An' that teacher left her wisdom in the minds of lots of children: Did her best to give 'em all a better start. An' that preacher whispered: "Can't you see the Promised Land?" As he laid his blood-stained bible in that hooker's hand.
There are three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway, Why there's not four of them, Heaven only knows. I guess it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, It's what you leave behind you when you go.
That's the story that our preacher told last Sunday. As he held that blood-stained bible up, For all of us to see. He said: "Bless the farmer, and the teacher, an' the preacher; "Who gave this Bible to my mamma, "Who read it to me."
There are three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway, Why there's not four of them, now I guess we know. It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, It's what you leave behind you when you go.
There are three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway. | | |
| passport fun:
so yeah, this morning at the wonderful time of 5:45 my sister Hadassah took me to surrey with her to get her passport done. this is an experience that i will never forget. first of all we made our necessary stop at Starbucks for our caffeine fix (and for something warm to hold on to). then we hauled our chairs and blankets over to the line that had begun at 3:30 in the morning (some people are insane i tell you). so we then waited outside in the cold from 6:20 for the doors to open at 8:00--- we were like around the 120th people in line. we had some wonderful conversations with a couple from salmon arm, a guy and his dad going to Portugal, and many other cold people. we also happened upon Mr. Boersma and his son John, who are flying to Belgium and France. we finally made it through the doors and got upstairs in the tower at approximately 8:40. Hadassah at this point thought that the line-up was finished, but had yet to turn the corner and look with horror at the 100+ people sitting in chairs after taking a number. and so we killed another hour and a half talking with random people, until she finally saw someone at approximately 10:00 in the morning. the process took around 5 minutes from start to finish once you were at their wickets. we then proceeded to walk with glee outside to our car, as it had started to rain slightly, and snicker at the 200+ people still waiting to get inside the building. i have officially decided that i am going to apply for a passport by doing it in the mail. no more crazy lineups, though we did hear that a few weeks ago there were people getting paid $400 to stand in the lineup for someone else, but the security guards put a stop to that rather quickly. moral of the story: plan way ahead and do it by mail, but if you have already left it to the sort-of last minute, get to the lineup early....
